Malcom Floyd chooses to remain optimistic about an NFL future hanging in the balance.

FedEx Air & Ground Players of Year

Philip Rivers posted a passer rating of 105.5, ranked fourth in the NFL with 32 touchdown passes and had his fifth 4,000-yard season. Was it the best performance for a quarterback in 2013?

The San Diego Chargers wide receiver had his season cut short by a neck injury suffered in Week 2. The spinal disc issue has been known to end careers. He expects to have a better idea about his future after a visit with a doctor next month.

"I definitely want to play again," Floyd told U-T San Diego. "I definitely do. I'm getting better steadily, and if my body allows me to play, I'm going to do it. I'm really excited for our team. I want to add some more firepower. ... If not, then yeah, I need to hang it up. It won't do anything positive. It won't help out me or the team."

Floyd suffered the disc injury after being sandwiched by two defenders during a Sept. 15 win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Floyd remained down on the field for several minutes and was eventually carted off the field. He was moved to injured reserve two weeks later.

Pepsi NEXT Rookie of the Year

Keenan Allen emerged as a go-to receiving threat for the Chargers, catching 71 passes for 1,046 yards. Was it the best rookie performance of 2013?

Floyd, 32, still sleeps with a neck brace and acknowledges he deals with pain caused by the open-field hit. But Floyd says he's recovering and has seen progress in his rehab work.

Floyd's injury opened the door for rookie Keenan Allen, who emerged as Philip Rivers' most productive and dependable target. Allen's rise, coupled with Floyd's uncertainty, could prompt San Diego to move on.
