Chargers lose LB English for 4 to 6 weeks with injured foot

Coming off a tough loss at Seattle, the Chargers were hit with more bad news Tuesday afternoon: Outside linebacker Larry English had foot surgery and is expected to miss four to six weeks, the team announced.

English, who was inactive for Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Seahawks, has had problems with the foot since training camp. English's absence further depletes the Chargers' depth at linebacker after they also lost Shawne Merriman to a calf injury Sunday.

at 9:15 p.m. ET.

English, a second-year pro, has four tackles and one-half sack in two games, both starts, this season. He played in all 16 games with two starts last season and finished with 36 tackles and two sacks.

The news was better for the Chargers' offense. Starting right guard Louis Vasquez won't need knee surgery but is expected to miss a minimum of two games, *The San Diego Union-Tribune* reported.

Vasquez, who has a sprained medial collateral ligament, was injured during the first quarter Sunday. Tyronne Green replaced Vasquez and likely will start this Sunday against the Cardinals.

The Chargers also could have rookie running back Ryan Mathews back for Sunday's game against the visiting Arizona Cardinals. Mathews emerged pain-free Monday from his most extensive workout since sustaining an ankle injury. Mathews was inactive for the loss at Seattle.

"They let me get after it today," Mathews said. "It didn't hurt. I felt like my normal self."

The Chargers also signed three players Tuesday, including veteran Ethan Albright, their fourth long snapper of the season. David Binn (hamstring), James Dearth (foot) and Ryan Neill (knee) all are on injured reserve.

The Chargers re-signed safety Quinton Teal, who was waived at the final cutdown earlier this month, and cornerback Dante Hughes, who was inactive in Weeks 1 and 2. The team waived running back Curtis Brinkley and placed Neill and linebacker James Holt (shoulder) on IR to make roster room.
