Cardinals' Rashad Johnson loses tip of finger during tackle

Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott is famous for having part of a finger amputated when it was crushed trying to make a tackle in 1985.

Arizona Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson can feel Lott's pain. He lost the tip of his middle finger on his left hand during punt coverage Sunday in what might be the most gruesome injury of the season.

The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers provided details of the injury, which Johnson discovered when he took off his glove and part of his finger remained in the glove.

Believe it or not, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Johnson is only questionable for this Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.

Johnson talked with "The Dan Patrick Show" on Tuesday about the injury and recalled a few other details. He said he had no choice in putting the missing part of the finger back. And he made the decision to have his fingernail removed to avoid possible infection when the nail grows back.

He still wanted to return to the game, which was tied 7-7 at the time.
