Cardinals cut safety Rouse after car accident, sign WR Jones

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals signed free-agent wide receiver Mike Jones on Wednesday and released safety Aaron Rouse, who was hurt in a car accident two days before.

Rouse signed with the Cardinals two weeks ago.

The 6-foot-4 Jones caught 131 passes for 1,853 yards in 49 games for Arizona State, with 61 receptions for 744 yards as a senior in 2008. He signed with the Houston Texans as a rookie free agent last year, but he was released in September. Jones joined the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad one month later, re-signed with the team in January, then was let go in June.

Injuries have left the Cardinals shy on receivers. Larry Fitzgerald is out with a sprained right knee, and Early Doucet has sat out practice this week with an abdominal strain. A third receiver, Ed Gant, has been limited in practice with a sore foot.

Rouse, who played for the New York Giants last season after two years with the Green Bay Packers, suffered a whiplash-type injury in a multiple-car accident en route to training camp Monday, but the injury wasn't believed to be serious. Teammate safety Rashad Johnson also was in the car but wasn't hurt.
