Cam Newton (ribs) out vs. Bucs; Derek Anderson starts

Cam Newton is going to miss the first game of his NFL career.

The Panthers' star QB is out for Sunday's division tilt against the Bucs with a rib injury. Derek Anderson will start in his place.

Newton was optimistic he would be able to go, but the decision came down to coach Ron Rivera.

Newton was sore in practice this week. He missed Wednesday's session and was limited Thursday. However, the Panthers quarterback practiced fully Friday, giving the Panthers hope.

It's a prudent move to sit the face of the franchise if he's not able to be himself on Sunday. Facing a studly Buccaneers defense with a questionable offensive line is not a solid proposition for an immobilized, injured quarterback.

If Newton isn't healthy, Week 1 isn't worth risking the entire season.
