Brian Robinson has a new home on the opposite coast of the United States, and it seems the sea breeze and sunshine has him feeling more optimistic than ever.
It doesn't hurt that All-Pro back Christian McCaffrey is his new running mate with the San Francisco 49ers, either.
"My job is to complement (McCaffrey) as well as I can and be the best duo in the league," Robinson said during an introductory press conference Monday in Santa Clara, California, following last week's trade from the Washington Commanders.
Becoming the best backfield tandem in the NFL is a lofty goal, but one that isn't entirely unrealistic for a few reasons. First, Robinson is entering an offensive scheme that has produced many running back rags-to-riches stories in previous years, thanks to the creativity and ingenuity of coach Kyle Shanahan.
"I'm very aware of how coach Shanahan likes to run his offense with his backs. He emphasized that when he called me," Robinson said. "He was like, 'Look, you know what I'm about. I'm ready to show you how we get down.' I'm like, 'Look, I'm ready for it.' I'm totally aware of how he does his things here. I'm ready for it. I've been running the ball my whole life. I'm ready to just plug and play.
"I came here ready to play and I want him to be able to use me like that. Whatever run scheme it is, he can throw me in and I'm already ready to execute the plays."
Secondly, Robinson doesn't have to be the lead back in San Francisco; he just has to complement McCaffrey, who is an elite runner when healthy.
That's the key, though: health. McCaffrey missed most of 2024 due to injury, and the 49ers are once again banged up in multiple areas offensively entering the 2025 season, missing multiple receivers and running backs as Week 1 approaches.
Robinson's addition might be just what the doctor ordered to prevent the injury bug from affecting them further. If he can spell McCaffrey effectively over the course of an 18-week season, the star will be able to manage his own health better, limit wear and tear and ideally produce at a premium rate.
For now, though, all we can do is project. Robinson is keeping his sights set toward the heavens.
