Best-ever picks by NFL draft spot: Picks 25-28

CFB 24/7 is counting down the days to the start of the 2016 NFL Draft (April 28-30 on NFL Network) by picking the best selections ever made for the top 32 draft positions.

25. Ted Washington

Team:San Francisco 49ers
Year: 1991
College: Louisville

Why we picked Washington: Washington used his 375-pound frame and competitiveness to systematically shut down opponents' running games. This four-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time Super Bowl champion (with the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII) was one of the NFL's most effective defensive tackles during a 17-year career spent with seven different teams.

Others considered:Stanley Morgan, Boyd Dowler

Last five No. 25 picks:Shaq Thompson (2015, Panthers), Jason Verrett (2014, Chargers), Xavier Rhodes (2013, Vikings), Dont'a Hightower (2012, Patriots), James Carpenter (2011, Seahawks)

26. Ray Lewis

Team:Baltimore Ravens
Year: 1996
College: Miami (Fla.)

Why we picked Lewis: Lewis, a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was the Ravens' second first-round pick in one of the greatest draft classes of all time (Jonathan Ogden went fourth overall). Lewis quickly emerged as one of the game's greatest linebackers, earning Pro Bowl honors 13 times and All-Pro honors seven times. However, it will be Lewis' 2000 season that will define his career -- he led a defense that set records for fewest points allowed (165) and fewest rushing yards allowed (970) and earned MVP honors in Super Bowl XXXV.

Others considered:Joe DeLamiellure

Last five No. 26 picks:Breshad Perriman (2015, Ravens), Marcus Smith (2014, Eagles), Datone Jones (2013, Packers), Whitney Mercilus (2012, Texans), Jon Baldwin (2011, Chiefs)

Who owns No. 26 pick this year?Seahawks

27. Dan Marino

Team:Miami Dolphins
Year: 1983
College: Pittsburgh

Why we picked Marino: Marino's hometown Steelers passed on him for Gabe Rivera and Marino was selected behind QBs Todd Blackledge, Tony Eason and Ken O'Brien in the 1983 draft. Marino went on to rewrite the passing section of the NFL's record book en route to a Hall-of-Fame career.

Others considered:Neal Anderson

Last five No. 27 picks:Byron Jones (2015, Cowboys), Deone Bucannon (2014, Cardinals), DeAndre Hopkins (2013, Texans), Kevin Zeitler (2012, Bengals), Jimmy Smith (2011, Ravens)

Who owns No. 27 pick this year?Packers

28. Darrell Green

Team:Washington Redskins
Year: 1983
College: Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville)

Why we picked Green: Green's inspiring story of overcoming the odds to have a 20-year Hall-of-Fame career made him an easy sentimental choice at this spot. Also, what a stellar back-to-back draft haul for the Dolphins and Redskins in the 1983 draft, which ranks as one of the all-time greatest, having landed four players in this all-time mock draft. Green's accolades include seven Pro Bowls and an NFL record for intercepting a pass in 19 consecutive seasons.

Others considered:Derrick Brooks

Last five No. 28 picks:Laken Tomlinson (2015, Lions), Kelvin Benjamin (2014, Panthers), Sylvester Williams (2013, Broncos), Nick Perry (2012, Packers), Mark Ingram (2011, Saints)
