The Philadelphia Eagles snagged the biggest receiver in the free-agency pond.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports Alshon Jeffery is signing with the Eagles on a one-year contract for $14 million. Philadelphia later officially announced the move.
After playing on the franchise tag last season for $14.6 million, Jeffery couldn't find a team willing to give him a long-term contract, given the climate, injuries and the fact that he was suspended four games last season, Rapoport said on NFL Network's Free Agency Frenzy.
Although Jeffery did turn down a multi-year offer from the Minnesota Vikings late in the process, Rapoport added.
Rather than take a below-market long-term deal, Jeffery is willing to bet on himself on another "prove-it" contract and attempt to cash in again next year.
Jeffery is coming off two disappointing seasons, compiling fewer than 900 yards receiving each year and just six total touchdowns while missing 11 games due to injury and the suspension. The Eagles are betting he can return to the big-play force he was in 2014, when he went for 1,133 yards and 10 TDs.
Philadelphia entered the offseason looking to upgrade one of the worst receiver corps in the NFL and accomplished as much, landing Jeffery and Torrey Smith on Thursday.
With Jeffery's big-play ability along the sideline and in the red zone, Smith's field-stretching speed, and Jordan Matthew's acumen underneath from the slot, Carson Wentz now has a formidable receiving corps in 2017.
The Eagles also agreed to a one-year deal with guard Chance Warmack. The former 2013 first-round pick spent his first four years with the Titans. Warmack was placed on injured reserve last season after he had surgery on his right hand.
