TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indianapolis Colts safety Antoine Bethea has cracked a bone in his right hand, leaving him on the sideline for both of the team's practices Wednesday.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell didn't give a timetable for Bethea's return. Caldwell did say that Bethea would be fitted for a cast and return when he can play while wearing it.

Losing Bethea is a blow to an Indianapolis defense that is still missing safety Bob Sanders. Caldwell said Wednesday morning that he wasn't sure Sanders would be back for the regular-season opener next month. Sanders had offseason surgery to clean up the same knee that kept him out of 10 games last season.

Bethea went to the Pro Bowl in 2007, the same year that Sanders was the NFL's defensive player of the year.

The Colts also have injuries on offense. Tight end Dallas Clark is expected to miss Friday night's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings and could be out until Monday with a slight concussion. Ryan Diem also sat out Wednesday morning's workout after hurting his back, and Caldwell said the starting right tackle likely would miss a couple of days.
