Smith, who's recovering from offseason microfracture knee surgery after four seasons with the New York Giants, hopes to join full-speed practices by the start of the regular season.
"Maybe Week 1 -- maybe that's when I'll start practicing," Smith told the Inquirer.
Smith dressed for his first practice Saturday, working with the team's other injured players.
"(The left knee) just feels like it's weaker than the (right) one, but it feels great when I'm running and cutting," Smith said. "So I haven't been having any setbacks."
It didn't take reporters long to ask Smith about his involvement in an offseason Twitter feud between Eagles running back LeSean McCoy and Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. Smith entered the back-and-forth at one stage to remind McCoy that, unlike the Eagles, the Giants have won a Super Bowl.
McCoy still is a little hot about the whole affair.
"It's going to take a little time," Smith said. "He wasn't the happiest."
Now that he's on the other side of the fence, Smith is hearing it from Giants fans on his Facebook page.
"They're just angry," Smith said. "It's like me going from UCLA from USC. But it's business, that's all it is for me."
