Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

    Great time!

Could have had better crowd disperse traffic. Overall, great time though.

A tough loss, a tougher time with line waiting in the cold.

by NFC Championship Watch Party - Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers on 2/3/24Ford Field - Detroit

A tough loss, but even tougher time with the frustration of being in the cold elements for a very long time. The long line waiting was unacceptable to get into Ford Field for this event! I've been to regular played football games, big concerts at Ford Field and it did not take as long to get in. It seems that management was totally unprepared on how to handle entry for this event. Once we were in Ford Field and in our seats for the NFC Championship Watch Party for the Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers it was fun and exciting environment even though being disappointed with the Lions loss that evening.

    Electric Atmosphere (Until We Lost)

by George on 1/31/24Ford Field - Detroit

Place was absolutely energetic! Everyone was excited and having fun! Only downside was the collapse in the second half bringing everyone down. Still an amazing experience and definitely hope to get season tickets for next season!

    Great experience!

by Bran on 1/31/24Ford Field - Detroit

Despite the outcome, I really enjoyed the Lions watch party! The power hour and pre game entertainment were great and really set the scene! My only area for improvement would have been playing music during the commercials. Our crowd was super excited to be there but feel like music would have assisted in keeping energy up and kept people from leaving their seats so frequently if it felt like more of party in the stadium. Otherwise, amazing experience and event. Excited for next season!+
