Draft 2009

Pick Analysis: A two-year starter at defensive tackle for the Wolverines, Johnson is viewed as a potential starting (or at least a valued reserve) 3-4 defensive end at the next level. His production does not leap off the stat sheet (8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks in 47 games), but his work ethic, large frame and upper body strength (47 reps at his pro day) have put him on the radar as a draftable prospect.

Johnson was a highly-decorated prospect on and off the field for Lake Orion High School. Rated as the No. 1 defensive lineman prospect in Michigan in 2003 and the No. 18 interior lineman nationally by Tom Lemming, Johnson was also an honor roll student all four years in high school. He also participated in the shot put for the track team.

He earned Academic All-Big Ten at Michigan as the top senior student-athlete on the football team. He closed out his career with 29 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and one fumble recovery in 2008. For his career, Johnson was credited with 81 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and one fumble recovery in 47 games with 24 starts.

While his stats didn't jump out to scouts enough to earn an invitation to the scouting combine in Indianapolis, his workout at Michigan's pro day did when Johnson lifted the 225-pound bench press 47 times, according to's Gil Brandt. To put that in perspective, Texas Tech offensive guard Louis Vasquez led all players tested at the combine with 39 reps.
