Pick Analysis: Shields is a one year starter in the Miami secondary as he moved from wide receiver to cornerback in 2009. Sam is a good combination of size and athleticism for the position but needs time to develop his technique as a secondary defender. He tends to give too much cushion in both zone and man coverage. Sam does have long arms and is physical to jam and reroute receivers off the line of scrimmage. He was inconsistent to leverage the ball with proper angles in both the run and passing game. Sam has been a solid special team’s player and has his best chance to contribute in this phase of the game as a rookie. This is a concern about previous suspensions as well as a definite learning curve in the secondary.
