Woodley voted Week 1 GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Week

National Football League

Linebacker LaMarr Woodley of the Pittsburgh Steelers is the GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Week for games played on Sept. 4-8.

Woodley was selected from among five finalists by voters on NFL.com/gmc. The other finalists were DE John Abraham of the Atlanta Falcons, CB Cortland Finnegan of the Tennessee Titans, CB Chris Gamble of the Carolina Panthers and DE Travis LaBoy of the Arizona Cardinals.

After the regular season, five players will be nominated for GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Year honors. Fans can vote for the winner on NFL.com/gmc throughout the month of January.

John Abraham, DE, Atlanta Falcons
Abraham posted three sacks in the Falcons’ 34–21 win over the Detroit Lions. Abraham's final take-down of Lions QB Jon Kitna forced Detroit to punt and set up Atlanta’s last drive, which ran out the clock and prevented any chance of a Lions comeback.
Cortland Finnegan, CB, Tennessee Titans
Finnegan posted five tackles and two interceptions in the Titans’ 17–10 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. His first interception off Jaguars QB David Garrard came at the Tennessee 14 to stop a Jacksonville scoring drive.
Chris Gamble, CB, Carolina Panthers
Gamble collected five tackles and made a crucial play to help the Panthers to a 26–24 win over the San Diego Chargers. In the third quarter, he recovered a fumble and ran it 31 yards for a touchdown that gave the Panthers the lead.
Travis LaBoy, DE, Arizona Cardinals
LaBoy posted four tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble in the Cardinals’ 23–13 win over the San Francisco 49ers. With just under two minutes remaining, LaBoy sacked 49ers QB J.T. O'Sullivan, forced a fumble and then recovered the ball to seal the Cardinals' win.
LaMarr Woodley, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Woodley batted down a pass, recorded a sack, recovered a fumble and made an interception in his first career start, a 38-17 win for the Steelers over the Houston Texans. Woodley’s interception set up a Pittsburgh TD for a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.
