| Rex Ryan is at the helm of the New York Jets after 10 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. |
As part of NFL Network's 32 Teams in 32 Days series, airing daily on Total Access, NFL.com takes a look at a key question facing each team.
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger and former NFL GM Charley Casserly of CBS Sports discuss the arrival of Rex Ryan in New York. What will be Ryan's impact on the Jets this season?
Read their take and then enter the discussion below.
Baldinger: Offense is the key Ryan just came from a team where a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback made the playoffs, so in his mind they can do it this season. The biggest thing for Ryan is to put his imprint on the defense. On offense, I think they'll run the ball very well. He kept the offensive line coach and the offensive coordinator. They had the AFC's leading rusher last year in Thomas Jones. Then they added Shonn Greene. They'll be fine running the ball. The Jets, defensively, will be very good. That's really not my concern. Their question is going to come at wide receiver. Whoever they play at quarterback, do the Jets have enough talent on the outside to be able to attack teams and make big plays? Right now, it looks awfully thin. Jerricho Cotchery is the only returning veteran and they have a pretty good young tight end in Dustin Keller, but they don't have anyone who gets down the field. | Casserly: Expect aggressive The Jets defense under Ryan will be an aggressive and attacking group. It will also be a talented unit. In the end, I think they can be very good defensively. The key for the Jets and their success will be the offense. What type of offense will it be? You would think Ryan would want a very conservative style. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has been a more aggressive coach than maybe the Jets are ready for right now. I think a lot of that will depend on the play of the QBs. I think you will see an aggressive, attacking defense with lots of swagger. The question will be whether they are good enough in coverage to hold up with the chances they'll take in pressuring the quarterback. The key will be the cornerbacks. Darrelle Revis is a good player. Whether Lito Sheppard is good enough to bounce back from last year remains to be seen. If they want to play a lot of man-pressure defense, it puts pressure on the cornerbacks. That will be crucial for that style of defense. |
