The Baltimore Ravens announced Monday that they have signed quarterback John Beck, who will try to revive his NFL career under the coach who drafted him two years ago.
Beck received a one-year contract from the Ravens, but financial terms weren't disclosed.
In Baltimore, Beck rejoins Cam Cameron, who was the Miami Dolphins' coach in 2007 and now is the Ravens' offensive coordinator. Cameron selected Beck out of BYU in the second round of the 2007 draft, and the quarterback played in five games as a rookie in Miami. However, Beck didn't appear in a game under new Dolphins coach Tony Sparano last season and was released just five days after Miami took West Virginia quarterback Pat White in the second round of last month's draft.
“John is a player we evaluated thoroughly in preparing for the 2007 draft,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome told the team's Web site. “He was a very productive college player, but what also impressed our scouts was how competitive he is. We like to bring in good athletes who love to compete, and he fits that.”
The Ravens passed up Beck late in the first round of the 2007 draft and took Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith with the last pick of the fifth round. Now Beck is expected to compete against Smith to be Joe Flacco's backup.
After adding Beck, the Ravens released third-string quarterback Todd Bouman, a 12-year NFL veteran who re-signed with Baltimore in March.
