Alex Smith hopes to play in NFL again: 'That's the plan'

Alex Smith suffered a devastating leg injury that threatens to terminate his NFL career.

In his first interview since the ghastly break, Smith spoke with Angie Goff of FOX5 DC, on *The Oh My Goff Show*, and the Washington Redskins quarterback said he hopes to resume his playing career at some point.

"That's the plan," Smith said. "That's the plan. Steps. I've got to conquer some more steps before I get there. Learn to run again. That's a big one. I'm already throwing. I already feel like throwing is not a problem. I feel like I can throw. But dropping, moving around, all that kind of stuff, change of direction."

Smith said he's currently working on "lifestyle" steps -- playing basketball with his children, getting back to a normal routine. The QB said he was able to play golf, can drive and workout now.

The 35-year-old said he must wear the external fixator for another four to six weeks. In total, Smith will wear the contraption, which he said comes from Siberia, for about seven and a half months.

"Believe it or not, this thing is going to save my leg, save my bone, allow me to heal and walk again and hopefully play football again," he said.

Once the fixator comes off, Smith can take more baby steps towards jogging and running. It will be a long, arduous road to recovery for the veteran quarterback, who said he's "excited" about the latest challenge in his ever-eventful career.
