Kansas State offensive tackle Scott Frantz revealed to teammates last year that he is gay.
Frantz told ESPN this week that he revealed his sexual orientation to the team during a team-building exercise, and said he was relieved to find acceptance in the Wildcats locker room.
"I came out to my teammates, and I've never felt so loved and so accepted ever in my life than when I did that," Frantz said. "And ever since then it's been great. I've grown so much closer to my teammates since. So it's been an amazing experience. ... So the very first time I said those words were in front of, you know, 110, 120 football guys. So you can imagine how scared I was, how nervous I was. ... This could go either really bad or could go really good. And thankfully my teammates embraced me with open arms, and it was great."
Frantz was prompted to come out to his teammates when a motivational speaker brought in by coach Bill Snyder encouraged players to reveal something they hadn't revealed before. Frantz was a starter for Kansas State last year as a sophomore.
Frantz said he became aware he was gay when he was in fifth grade, but did not tell his family until a week after he told his teammates. He also did not mention it to college coaches during his recruitment for fear that he wouldn't be offered scholarships. Snyder told ESPN it wouldn't have affected his recruitment of Frantz, and that he was confident players would be accepting of Frantz.
He will be one of two openly gay players in the FBS ranks this fall, per the report, as incoming Arizona freshman DE My-King Johnson also is openly gay.
