Benjamin: 'I need to be in the best shape of my life'

Kelvin Benjamin understands that if he's going to become an upper-echelon receiver, he's got to be in peak shape.

After coming into offseason workouts heavier than coaches wanted, KB knows he must shed pounds.

"I need to be in the best shape of my life. That's what we're getting to," Benjamin said Wednesday, via Max Henson of the team's official website. "I have to get back to being dominant."

Benjamin knows coaches weren't happy with his offseason weight, but believes the issue is in the past.

"I was really kind of disappointed," Benjamin said. "I wanted to come in and set the bar high for myself and let my teammates know that KB is back this year and he's ready to roll.

"I think people saw that first weigh-in and were like, 'Woah, is he ready to play?' But we had a good talk. (coach Ron Rivera and general manager Dave Gettleman) told me what I had to do, and that's what I've been doing."

The Panthersdiversified their offense in the draft, adding Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel. Even with those new weapons, Cam Newton needs a fit Benjamin to clear out space underneath and gobble up attention in the red zone for the offense to function at full force.
