LeGarrette Blount, Giants share a mutual interest

Free-agent running backs are grabbing chairs before Thursday's draft kicks off.

With Adrian Peterson headed to New Orleans, the next running back domino to watch is LeGarrette Blount and the Giants. Per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, there is mutual interest between Big Blue and the bulldozing back. A potential deal could happen before the draft kicks off.

The Giants need a power rusher after owning one of the least efficient running games in the NFL last season. Blount's between-the-tackles and short-yardage ability would mesh well with Shane Vereen and Paul Perkins in New York's backfield.

The door to Blount returning to New England, where he enjoyed his best season, slammed shut after the Patriots signed restricted free agent Mike Gillislee away from Buffalo.

It's not surprising that veteran running backs would ink deals ahead of the start of Thursday's draft in Philadelphia. With the draft loaded at the running back position, veterans could be left out in the cold if teams fill their backfield needs with younger, cheaper options.
