Responding to an ESPN report stating he considered a candidate for the Redskins general manager job, NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock says he hasn't made any official contact with the team about the position.

"Regarding Adam Schefter's report about the Redskins GM position: There has been no official contact between myself and the team and no interviews about the job," Mayock said in a statement to "My focus and energy -- as it typically is this time of year -- is squarely focused on the NFL Draft and NFL Network's coverage of that event ... this year in my hometown of Philly!"

Mayock's reported candidacy for the job emerges a day after the Redskins announced the firing of general manager Scot McCloughan. The Redskins have not announced any interviews tied to the vacancy.

Although Mayock hasn't held a position in an NFL front office, he is considered a prominent draft analyst and football talent evaluator. For those reasons, he has been considered a candidate for front-office jobs in the past.

A standout defensive back at Boston College, Mayock was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1981 and played parts of two seasons with the New York Giants in 1982-83 before later embarking on a career in sports broadcasting. He started working for NFL Network in 2005.
