Torrey Smith quickly found a home.
Days after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers, the receiver landed a three-year deal, worth $15 million to head to Philadelphia, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday. The Eagles later confirmed the move.
With one of the worst receiving corps in the NFL last season, the Eagles were desperate to land a veteran wideout. After the dream of reuniting with DeSean Jackson failed, landing Smith at a decent price is solid Plan B.
Smith spent his first four seasons in Baltimore as a one-trick deep threat, then signed in San Francisco for big money. He flopped in two seasons in a pathetic 49ers offense, compiling a meager 930 yards and seven touchdowns on 53 receptions in 28 games.
The deep threat should be a much better fit in Philly.
Carson Wentz didn't have a consistent speed option to spread the field last season. If there is one thing Smith can still do at 28-years-old, it's take the top off the defense. The threat alone should help open the underneath routes for Jordan Matthews and the tight ends.
Adding Smith shouldn't preclude Eagles GM Howie Roseman from snagging a receiver early in April's draft.
