INDIANAPOLIS -- Texas A&M's Myles Garrett is the heavy favorite to be the first pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, and Garrett believes he deserves that billing.
If there are any doubters lingering, the freakishly athletic pass rusher said Saturday that he expects to alleviate the concerns by the time he leaves the NFL Scouting Combine after a workout on Sunday.
"I feel like I'm the best player in the draft," Garrett said. "I feel I'll prove that today and tomorrow."
He's been a star since his freshman season for the Aggies, when he recorded 11.5 sacks and was quickly heralded as a future NFL star. He was hampered by injury throughout the 2016 season, and some evaluators believe he takes plays off, but the consensus is he's going to be an elite defender at the next level.
Garrett said he's not going to allow his standing as the likely No. 1 pick go to his head, though.
"(It) shows I'm the top dog, at least from the beginning," he said. "... Once I'm in the NFL, I can't just hang my hat on that. I got to keep on rising."
The only bump in the road for Garrett thus far this offseason was a video that showed him making a plea for the Cowboys to trade up to get the No. 1 pick so they could select him. It didn't sit well with fans of the Browns, who hold the top pick, and Garrett said he plans to apologize to the Browns when he meets with them at the combine.
Between now and the draft, Garrett said the things he can do to prove he's worthy of that top pick are dominating at the combine and not making any more "crazy videos."
The young prodigy is learning from his mistakes.
