Jeff Fisher: 'I want a chance to play the Rams'

Those words came directly from Jeff Fisher in an exclusive interview with Charissa Thompson that aired during FOX's pregame show Sunday.

Fisher -- who was fired Monday after five dangerously mediocre seasons with the team -- pulled no punches when asked why he was let go.

"He didn't win enough games, and the organization has a much bigger picture," Fisher said of himself. "And I don't think I was ever part of seeing the new stadium."

Fisher's jab about "beating the Rams" came in response to being asked what his "perfect scenario" would include if he winds up coaching again.

It's fair to wonder, though, if that chance will ever arrive. Notched alongside Dan Reeves with an NFL-"best" 165 career losses, Fisher is no sure bet to land another job.

Of course, NFL coaches are recycled at a ridiculous rate. All it takes is another league owner willing to buy what Fisher is selling.

Here are some other notable topics Fisher touched on during his interview:

-- Fisher firmly believes Jared Goff can succeed in the NFL. "He's an outstanding young man and he's going to be the face of this franchise. Franchise quarterback. He's going to be fine."

-- The Rams' decision to let him go caught Fisher by surprise: "When (Rams executive vice president) Kevin (Demoff) came in and told me. No idea before that. No, no idea. You know, recently I signed an extension and I knew things were getting tough. I knew that, but I didn't anticipate this. I always thought that depending on what happens the last few weeks (of the season) that there may be that potential with the season being over, but I was a little caught off guard with the short week."

-- Fisher said he wasn't pleased with how the Rams handled news about the contract extension he signed with the team before the start of the season. "None of it was handled appropriately in my opinion. In this day in age the successful teams in the National Football League are tight-knit, they work together and they stay quiet. They don't leak things. And that was a frustration of mine."
