J.J. Watt is out for the entire 2016 NFL season after undergoing back surgery.
Texans coach Bill O'Brien confirmed at a news conference Friday that Watt will indeed miss the rest of the season after having surgery.
The All-Pro defensive end underwent surgery Thursday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source informed of the situation. Surgery was their best choice for recovery rather than rehab and rest, Rapoport added, but it will keep him out for the remainder of the season.
Watt was expected to miss the season with there only being a slim chance of the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year returning even if he didn't undergo surgery, Rapoport reported.
The Texans announced Wednesday they placed him on injured reserve. Watt re-injured his back during Houston's Week 3 loss to the New England Patriots.
This is Watt's second surgery in three months. He missed the entire preseason after having surgery to repair a herniated disk in late July.
