Baker Mayfield experienced a breakthrough season in his first year as Oklahoma's starting quarterback. After throwing for 3,700 yards and 36 touchdowns, and rushing for seven more scores, Mayfield earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors, and was selected second-team All-America. He helped guide the Sooners to the College Football Playoff, and his return is a big reason why OU is expected to make another playoff run.

CFB 24/7 is marking the days to the start of the 2016 season by counting down the top 25 players in college football.

Mayfield redshirted in 2014 after transferring from Texas Tech -- where he earned Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors as a walk-on in 2013. He's among the favorites for the Heisman this season after finishing fourth in the Heisman voting last year.

Pulling back the curtain on the vote

Mayfield earned votes from six of seven CFB 24/7 experts, and only one QB finished ahead of him in the #CFBTop25 countdown. In CFB 24/7's "16 for '16" series, Mayfield was rated No. 2 among quarterbacks we'd most want to see on the field with the game on the line.

Where do fans rank Mayfield?

We asked Twitter users who they considered the best player in college football. Mayfield received enough votes to finish fifth overall. Thanks to a Big 12 rule change, Mayfield still has two more seasons of eligibility at Oklahoma. That's promising news for Sooners fans.
