Many expected Jonathan Allen, coming off of an excellent junior season, to join Derrick Henry, Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson in declaring for early entry into the 2016 NFL Draft. He decided to stay in school, though, and he joins a talented contingent returning to Tuscaloosa for another run at a national championship.

CFB 24/7 is marking the days to the start of the 2016 season by counting down the top 25 players in college football.

Allen was the Crimson Tide's leader in sacks in 2015 with 12, and NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah was impressed with the versatile DL when he watched his tape this summer. Jeremiah called him "a model technician" and compared him to the Titans' Jurrell Casey.

Pulling back the curtain on the vote

Allen received votes from six of the seven CFB 24/7 experts, including one vote in the top five and two more in the top 10. Allen is among four Alabama players to rank in the top six in NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein's ranking of the top 15 senior prospects in college football.

What some of our analysts are saying about Allen

"Allen makes it look so easy at times with body control and hand usage. Production on all three downs is what he's capable of." -- Lance Zierlein

"Allen is Nick Saban's latest playmaker along the defensive frontline. Talented defender with a strong nose for the ball." -- Bucky Brooks

* * *

"Allen is borderline unblockable when he gets to pass rush against offensive guards." -- Daniel Jeremiah

"Had Allen entered the 2016 draft as an underclassman, he might have been the first Crimson Tide defender off the board, ahead of second-rounders Reggie Ragland, Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson." -- Chase Goodbread

* * *

"The first-team All-SEC pick had 12 sacks in 2015. He returns to school for one last season to show off his versatility as his team tries to repeat." -- Chad Reuter

Where do fans rank Allen?

We asked Twitter users who they considered the best player in college football. Allen did not receive a fan vote. Having operated on a defensive line that also featured 2016 NFL Draft second-rounders Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson, it would be easy for Allen to get lost in the mix of all that talent. That won't be the case this season.
