ACC coach: Derwin James could be better than Jalen Ramsey

Florida State safety Derwin James can count on being measured against 2016 first-round pick and former FSU defensive back Jalen Ramsey as the new star of the Seminoles' secondary.

Could the versatile James be even better than Ramsey? One ACC coach thinks so.

"Derwin James is flat scary good. He could probably start at all 11 positions. He's one of those freaky guys who might be better than Ramsey when it's all said and done," the coach told Athlon Sports.

James is coming off a spectacular freshman season in which he made 91 tackles, ranking second on the team, with 4.5 sacks among 9.5 tackles for loss. As for starting at all 11 positions, that's a little outlandish; surely Paul Johnson's triple-option offense at Georgia Tech would love to run the fullback dive at a 213-pound defensive tackle. But there is no doubting James is one of college football's budding stars.

James reportedly underwent surgery recently to repair a small fracture in his foot. According to Warchant.com, James should be ready to fully participate in practice by the second week of fall camp. James took to Twitter with assurance that he'll be ready to play when the Seminoles open the season against Ole Miss on Sept. 5.

Ramsey, the No. 5 overall pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in April, played just about everywhere in the secondary for the Seminoles over the course of his career. Both players are freakish athletes.

Still, the notion that James could ultimately be the better player of the two is high praise.
