Saints favorites to sign free agent Anquan Boldin

Could Anquan Boldin become the New Orleans Saints' newest possession receiver?

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday the Saints are the favorites to sign the free-agent receiver and are making the strongest push, per a source informed of the situation. Rapoport added that Boldin loves Saints receivers coach John Morton -- the duo spent two seasons together in San Francisco.

Boldin is the best free-agent wideout currently on the market. Boldin has only taken two reported visits this offseason, with the Redskins in March and the Lions in June.

The 35-year-old receiver was never known for his speed and won't break away from coverage. The Saints have speed elsewhere at wideout in Brandin Cooks and rookie Michael Thomas.

Boldin's big body and strong hands make him a viable receiving target even as Father Time gains an advantage. The Saints are in the market for a veteran possession receiver like Boldin after they cut Marques Colston earlier this offseason.

Boldin would add a big red zone target, which the Saints could use. If signed, he might take some pressure off of Thomas -- or lower the rookie's Fantasy Football value, if you choose to view it from that angle.
