Speed has always been considered one of Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman's strengths, and his 40-yard dash at BU's pro day Wednesday did anything to change that perception.
Coleman clocked times of 4.37 and 4.40 seconds in the 40, per NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt, who attended the pro day. NFL Media's James Palmer captured video of Coleman running the 40 on Wednesday:
Coleman, who's considered one of the top WRs in this year's draft, did not run the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine last month after undergoing sport-hernia surgery in late December, which added to the anticipation for his run on Wednesday. Coleman told Palmer he was at about 90 percent for his run on Wednesday.
A 4.37 would have been the second-fastest time (Will Fuller's 4.32 was the best time) among wide receivers who ran the 40 at the combine. The lack of speed in this year's WR class has been well-documented, but Coleman is undoubtedly one of the fastest in the group.
There weren't any doubts about his speed -- the bigger question for Coleman centers on his route-running ability and his hands. He ran a "limited number of simple routes" in Baylor's offense, NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein wrote in his draft profile for Coleman. Per Zierlein's profile: "Hands are a concern. Fails to catch away from his body. Dropped 10 passes for a drop rate of 11.9 percent. Loses focus and concentration on routes that work towards the middle of the field or when he senses defenders are closing in."
NFL evaluators were likely more interested to see how Coleman fared in position drills than in the 40, and one NFL head coach took particularly close interest in the WR's route running on Wednesday.
