Chase Daniel is following Doug Pederson across the country, and is ready to give the Eagles great depth at the quarterback position. He might even give them a quarterback competition.Â
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Daniels has agreed to a three-year, $21 million contract with the Eagles, according to a source informed of the deal. Daniels was the backup quarterback in Kansas City under Pederson and logic would make him the clear backup to Sam Bradford in Philly. But the story may not be so simple.Â
NFL Media's Albert Breer reports that the Eagles plan to give Daniel every chance to take the starting job from Bradford. Daniel was not necessarily signed to be a backup.
Finances dictate that Daniel is the heavy underdog in any competition. Bradford is being paid $36 million over the next two seasons, which would be a crazy amount for a backup. Even assuming Bradford wins the Week 1 job, don't be surprised if Daniels winds up playing a key role for the Eagles. Â This move also probably means that Mark Sanchez's time in Philadelphia is up.Â
Bradford has only started 16 games in his career twice since getting taken No. 1 overall by the St. Louis Rams in 2010. Daniel has looked like a promising prospect in his preseason outings over the years and in his two NFL starts for the Chiefs. He has more experience in coach Doug Pederson's system.Â
Barring Bradford surprisingly showing up in trade talks, Daniel essentially gives the team a nice fallback option if Bradford gets hurt or things go horribly wrong. It's never too too late for Daniel to "Make the Leap. "Â
