Robert Griffin III's college coach, Baylor's Art Briles, certainly isn't about to write off his former prized pupil. Briles thinks the right opportunity is the only thing separating Griffin from a career resurgence the likes of which has rarely been seen.
Griffin didn't play a snap last season for the Washington Redskins, but he's one of the most intriguing free agents of the offseason after being released this week.
He never recaptured the dominant form he displayed as a rookie in 2012, as injuries and coaching turnover played a role in his demise with the Redskins. Briles says the team that gives Griffin a second chance will be rewarded if it gives him the necessary support.
"I think situations determine outcomes," Briles told Washington D.C.'s 106.7 The Fan on Tuesday. "I think if he gets in a situation and the right fit of somebody that understands him from an athletic standpoint, an intellectual standpoint, that will let him play, let him have freedom, then I think you're looking at another six-to-eight-year career that could be as phenomenal as some people have ever had. It's just all about the situation. It's about the people that he's around and them allowing him to be him."
Which team could offer that fit?
Around the NFL's Conor Orr lays out several potential destinations for Griffin here, with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs at the top of the list.
Briles referred to landing with the Dallas Cowboys as a "dream" scenario for Griffin in January. He was more opaque on the topic Tuesday when he was asked about what the right fit would be for the QB.
"It's hard to say," Briles said. "I think the right fit is certainly being able to protect him with a great running game, doing a little play-action and giving him some options of making some plays with some feet, but that competitive spirit, that's a deal that can really sometimes hurt you in the NFL because it's all about staying healthy in the league and staying there for a long time. You love the fearless nature of guys, but at the same time, you have to understand that your value is being on the field and not on the sideline."
If Griffin can get off the sideline -- and stay off of it by winning a starting job somewhere and staying healthy, perhaps his second act in the NFL will indeed be even better than his first.
