Colin Kaepernick open to San Francisco 49ers return

When coaches and executives take the podium at the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine later this week, one of the most pressing questions will be submitted to 49ers general manager Trent Baalke:

What is Colin Kaepernick's future in San Francisco?

One offseason report has connected Kaepernick to the New York Jets, emphasizing that the quarterback wants out of the 49ers organization.

Even if Kaepernick has trust issues with the organization, he's not pushing for a trade.

Kaepernick "certainly is more than open to returning to San Francisco" for the 2016 season, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Monday's edition of NFL Total Access.

The 49ers will owe Kaepernick his full base salary of $11.9 million if he remains on the roster April 1.

That raises the question of whether Chip Kelly wants Kaepernick as his starting quarterback on the heels of a disappointing 2015 season.

Although Rapoport has noted that Kelly was interested in Kaepernick even before landing the San Francisco job, the new coach has yet to publicly endorse Kaepernick over Blaine Gabbert.

This week's events should provide a semblance of clarity, as the 49erswill meet with Kaepernick's representatives in Indianapolis, according to the Sacramento Bee.

Perhaps the team's brass can use those rap sessions to explain how Kelly will breathe new life into Kaepernick's stalled career.
