NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport first reported Newsome's release.
Newsome, 25, posted a string of tweets related to his release on Monday morning:
I would like to thank Coach Pagano, Ryan Grigson, Jim Irsay and the entire Colts organization for the opportunity of a life time.â Jonathan Newsome (@JNEW_11) February 22, 2016
I learned alot during my time here in Indianapolis, becoming a better football player and person. I have made mistakes, but ive grown.â Jonathan Newsome (@JNEW_11) February 22, 2016
Somethings happen and I cant question God and his plan. Bottom line you have to stay the course and pray about it but never worry about it.â Jonathan Newsome (@JNEW_11) February 22, 2016
Zionsville Police Department Sgt. Adrian Martin confirmed to NFL Media that Newsome was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession early Wednesday morning.
This marks Newsome's second marijuana-related arrest. Newsome was suspended for two games at Ball State after he was arrested in August 2012 for marijuana possession.
The Colts used a fifth-round pick on Newsome in the 2014 draft. His first season was a success -- he led the team with 6.5 sacks and forced three fumbles. He didn't have near the same impact in his second season, however, managing a single sack and one forced fumble in 14 games.
Newsome is young and has flashed enough ability to get another shot elsewhere, but it's probably time for him to start focusing on his career and maybe stop smoking weed.
