Niners fire DC Eric Mangini, offer Curtis Modkins OC job

The Chip Kelly cuts have commenced.

The 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday. Rapoport added San Francisco has also offered Lions run game coordinator Curtis Modkins its offensive coordinator job.

NFL Media's Rand Getlin reported that the Niners have also agreed to terms with Bears special teams assistant Derius Swinton to be their new special teams coordinator.

Mangini had been with the 49ers organization for three seasons, but was the defensive coordinator for just one year. Mangini worked as a tight ends coach and offensive consultant under Jim Harbaugh in 2014 and 2013, respectively. Twice a head coach in the NFL with the Jets and Browns, Mangini shouldn't be on the streets for long. His exit is more the result of a regime change rather than poor performance.

Rapoport reported that former Raiders defensive coordinator and current 49ers senior defensive assistant Jason Tarver is a possible replacement for Mangini.

Kelly typically has a very hand-on approach to running his offense, so if Modkins agrees to be San Francisco's OC, it will be interesting to see what exactly his role will be on the 49ers.
