Browns coach Mike Pettine announced Thursday that Johnny Manziel will miss the Week 17 finale against the Steelers due to a concussion suffered in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs.
Manziel was officially diagnosed and placed in the league's concussion protocol on Wednesday. That move came after Manziel arrived at the Browns' complex complaining of symptoms after the loss to the Chiefs. Manziel ran for 100 yards in the game and took several hard shots from Kansas City defenders.
Austin Davis will make his second start of the season in Manziel's place. Davis will likely be backed up by Terrelle Pryor, who worked as a quarterback during Wednesday's practice.
It's an anticlimactic way to end another disappointing year for Manziel, who finishes the season 129-of-223 for 1,500 yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions through the air and 37 rushes for 230 yards on the ground. He appeared in 10 games including six starts (2-4).
Pettine told reporters on Thursday that Manziel has shown on the field this season that he can be the Browns' quarterback of the future, but cautioned that off-the-field issues make "sustained success difficult."
Translation: Manziel will enter the offseason in a vulnerable place within the organization. Browns officials could wake up Monday morning with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft. Manziel didn't make the most of a two-year audition. If the Browns go in another direction he has no one to blame but himself.
