Duke wins first bowl game in 54 years on controversial FG ruling

Duke snapped a 54-year bowl-win drought on Saturday with a 44-41 overtime victory over Indiana in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, but needed a controversial call on a game-ending field-goal attempt to do it. Officials ruled that Indiana's Griffin Oakes missed a 38-yard field goal in overtime on the game's final play, and the celebration began for Duke.

The Blue Devils' rushing attack carried the team to its first bowl win since a 7-6 win over Arkansas in the 1961 Cotton Bowl. Three Blue Devils -- quarterback Thomas Sirk and running backs Jela Duncan and Shaun Wilson -- rushed for more than 100 yards each. Duke rushed for 373 yards in the game.

But it was Oakes' field goal try that generated postgame discussion. The play was not reviewable. Was the field goal good?

IU senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld completed 28 of 51 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns, while Hoosiers running back Devine Redding piled up 227 rushing yards in a wild offensive shootout that featured 48 second-half points.

The game's top NFL draft prospect was Indiana senior left tackle Jason Spriggs, who played effectively in his final college game. Duke safety Jeremy Cash, the Blue Devils' top pro prospect, missed the game with an injury. Both players have accepted invites to the Reese's Senior Bowl.
