Reports: Butch Davis, Greg Schiano interview for Miami job

Could Butch be back?

Former Miami Hurricanes and Cleveland Browns head coach Butch Davis has interviewed for the Miami job, according to reports, and he's not the only coach with NFL ties in the running. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano has interviewed with the school, as well, and impressed people with a connection to the search, per FOX Sports. Schiano was UM's defensive coordinator from 1999-2000, where he coached future NFL stars such as linebacker Dan Morgan and safety Ed Reed.

Davis coached the Hurricanes from 1995-2000, and was a defensive line coach there during a dominant Hurricanes era in the mid-1980s. He expressed interest in the job after the midseason firing of Al Golden. Davis last coached at North Carolina, where he was terminated amid an academic scandal, but was not faulted by the NCAA in the case. Former Georgia coach Mark Richt and current Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen are candidates for the job, as well, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

The field of candidates for the Miami job illustrates just how fast the winter coaching carousel will spin. With 13 open FBS jobs, candidates range from current head coaches like Mullen, to now-exiting ones like Richt, to former ones like Davis and Schiano. There is no shortage of experience in the pool, yet some younger coordinators like Alabama's Kirby Smart and Temple head coach Matt Rhule could be poised to be hired, as well.

Just days after parting ways with Georgia, Richt has been busy. The former Hurricanes quarterback told a radio station he's been contacted by five schools.

UM (8-4) won four of its last five games after Golden was terminated following a 58-0 loss to Clemson.
