Jim Tomsula: Blaine Gabbert to start again for 49ers

Blaine Gabbert has earned a second consecutive start for the San Francisco 49ers.

Coach Jim Tomsula met with his quarterbacks Monday afternoon and informed them that Gabbert will start at Seattle after the Week 10 bye, according to the team's official website.

Every game, all season

The decision comes as no surprise after watching Gabbert lead the 49ers to an upset victory over the Falcons on Sunday.

Although Tomsula downplayed the benching of Colin Kaepernick as an opportunity for the ersatz franchise quarterback to "step back and breathe," Gabbert simply gives the team a better chance to win right now.

Kaepernick struggled to read the field and make quick decisions, going 27 consecutive drives without a touchdown in his last three starts.

To Gabbert's credit, he avoided negative plays, didn't take a single sack and tossed a pair of touchdowns on 25 pass attempts.

No one is ready to anoint Gabbert the franchise savior, but there's no harm in riding a little momentum in a lost season.

When the quarterback situation is as dire as San Francisco's, it's naturally a week-to-week proposition.
