Navy hands Paxton Lynch-led Memphis first loss of season

Paxton Lynch might be the quarterback headed for NFL riches, but on Saturday, it was Navy's triple-option offense that played the starring role as the Midshipmen upset No. 13 Memphis, 45-20, for the Tigers' first loss of the season.

Lynch, a junior, has generated plenty of buzz as a draft prospect this season. The St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins were expected to scout Saturday's game, but what they saw instead was a steady dose of option football. Navy rushed for 374 yards and five touchdowns to keep Memphis' 6-foot-7 signal caller off the field, hogging nearly 37 minutes of possession time.

Lynch didn't have a bad day -- 26 of 42 for 305 yards, a touchdown, and an interception -- but on a day when the Memphis defense had no answers, Lynch didn't have enough of them.

It was Lynch's eighth consecutive game of 300-plus passing yards.
