Obama meets with Harbaugh, tells Wolverines to keep 'chin up'

A crazy story is taking another this-gets-even-weirder turn, as it just so happens that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh met with President Barack Obama at the White House on Monday, two days after the Wolverines lost to Michigan State in jaw-dropping fashion.

"He was great. We talked about some mutual friends that we both know, and he said the same thing you just said: 'Tough way to lose a football game,'" Harbaugh said, per the Detroit Free Press. "(He) told the fellas to keep their chin up. ... (He) likes the way our team plays and he told the guys to keep it going."

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that conversation.

Harbaugh visited Washington D.C. to help promote the "Make Better Room" public-awareness campaign, which aims to help ensure teenage students receive the resources needed to continue their education beyond high school. The campaign is part of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Reach Higher" initiative.

The first-year Michigan coach has led a resurgence of the Wolverines program, and was set to notch his biggest win yet this season on Saturday, before UM punter Blake O'Neill's fumble, which was returned 38 yards by the Spartans for a game-winning touchdown as time expired.

Michigan interim athletic director Jim Hackett on Sunday admonished fans that made O'Neill the target of their vitriol in the wake of the loss, and Harbaugh echoed some of those sentiments, telling the Free Press that fans making those comments "were a very small percentage of people ... who were probably drinking too much."

"The support that we have, that our players have, is powerful, it's enduring," he said, per the report. "We have felt it this entire season and continue to do so."

Michigan has a bye this weekend and will try to bounce back on the road against Minnesota on Oct. 31.
