The Cleveland Browns like what they've seen so far out of Austin Davis.
The team inked the backup quarterback to a two-year contract extension worth $4.2 million on Wednesday, a source who witnessed the deal told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Set to earn $600,000 in guarantees, Davis is now signed through 2017.
Waived by the Rams at final cuts, Davis joined the Browns earlier this month as a safety valve behind starting quarterback Josh McCown and second-year arm Johnny Manziel.
Although he's been inactive over the first three games, the 26-year-old undrafted arm out of Southern Miss is seen by the Browns as a player with "starting potential," per The Plain Dealer. After signing Davis, coach Mike Pettine said, "Austin's been a guy that there's been some intrigue with," adding that "his name has come up before."
Still, with McCown and Manziel both signed through 2017, it's unusual to see Cleveland dish out cash to a third-string signal-caller. The Browns, though, are desperate to find a gem under center and we wouldn't be surprised to see all three quarterbacks play in 2015.
