Rex Ryan has always fostered a weighty man-crush on quarterbacks who can run. Now the Buffalo Bills coach has one to call his own.
Tyrod Taylor exploded onto the scene in Sunday's 27-14 romp over the Colts, hitting on 14 of 19 passes for 195 yards and scampering through Indy's suspect defense for another 41 yards rushing -- equaling LeSean McCoy's output on the ground.
"At the end of the day," Ryan said, per The Buffalo News. "This guy's got some magic to him with his legs."
As coach of the Jets, Ryan fell in love with gadget ground plays out of the Wildcat, largely because he knew firsthand how a mobile operator could keep defensive coaches up at night. Brad Smith and Tim Tebow were low-impact contributors in Florham Park, but Taylor has Bills fans wondering if they've finally found a worthy signal-caller.
"He beats you with his arm," Ryan said. "He's smart. You can't trick him. I mean, it's hard to trick him. Obviously, he has that added dimension with his legs. You know, he's great. He's got a great feel for it. ... The great ones, they just got that presence. He has a presence to him."
Taylor also has a creative coordinator in Greg Roman who helped guide the 49ers to a Super Bowl with fleet-footed Colin Kaepernick at the wheel.
It's just one game, but Taylor showed poise and smart decision-making in his first NFL start. It's premature to throw the word "magic" around -- let Rex be Rex -- but with plenty of weapons and one of the NFL's top defenses in their court, the Bills might be in for a memorable campaign.
