McElwain: We have packages for Vernon Hargreaves on offense

Florida coach Jim McElwain said earlier this summer that Gators cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III will return kicks this season.

Now, the first-year UF coach is hinting that we might see Hargreaves on offense, too.

"Vernon is as good a player in all aspects of the game as I've been around," McElwain told Sports Illustrated. "Let me say this too, the guy loves to practice. He's not a prima donna, which really to me is what sets him apart. I'll go ahead and tell you, but we've got packages for him on offense too."

McElwain passed on a chance to be more specific about Hargreaves' potential role on offense, saying "I'll leave it at that."

It's no surprise that McElwain wants to utilize Hargreaves' playmaking ability to the fullest. He said last month that returning kicks would expand the star player's "brand." It will make Florida a better team, too, if Hargreaves can provide a spark in all three phases. Plus, now that he's hinted at it publicly, opposing defensive coordinators will have to prepare for a Hargreaves offensive package.

Hargreaves was voted the No. 7 player in college football by CFB 24/7's panel of experts last month, and NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein rated him the No. 1 defensive back to watch this season.
