If Florida's defensive backs are truly deserving of the "DBU" title they self-assigned, they won't get the chance to fully show it until at least the second week of the season.
Starting safety Marcus Maye has been suspended for the team's season opener against New Mexico State for violations of University Athletic Association policy, removing a key performer from the UF secondary against a team that won't be afraid to put the ball in the air. Receiver Latroy Pittman and defensive lineman Alex McCalister were suspended as well, according to The Gainesville Sun.
Of greater importance to the UF defense is that Maye is back in good standing and ready to play in the team's SEC opener at Kentucky Sept. 19. UF faces East Carolina on Sept. 12, which figures to mark Maye's return.
Here are four other things we learned from fall camps around college football on Friday:
2. Drawing scouts. NFL scouts don't waste time checking out top prospects in person once fall camps open, and according to the Salt Lake Tribune, a lot of them have been getting an eyeful of Utah RB Devontae Booker so far.
3. Public figure. At Florida State, jury selection is underway in the misdemeanor battery trial of Seminoles RB Dalvin Cook, who is indefinitely suspended after allegedly punching a woman outside a bar. And if the prosecution had hoped Cook would not be recognized as a football player by members of the jury pool, it was quickly disappointed Friday morning.
4. Snake-bitten. The left guard position at Tennessee is beginning to look cursed. First, starter Marcus Jackson was lost for most or all of the season with an injury. Then his replacement, Austin Sanders, went down for the year with a biceps tear. Reportedly, coach Butch Davis is down to freshman options at the position, which spells a potential field day for some of the SEC's top defensive tackles.
5. New kid in town. The buzz around Arkansas on Friday was more about who is arriving to the team than who is already on it. Former five-star quarterback Ricky Town, who previously announced he was transferring out of USC, declared himself a Razorback. Town will have this season to sit out and learn the system, and will compete for the starting job in 2016.
