Kelvin Benjamin sprains knee in practice, to have MRI

The Carolina Panthers saw one of their star players, and another promising one, go down Wednesday morning.

Kelvin Benjamin was carted from practice after suffering what appeared to be a left knee injury, according to reporters at the joint practice with the Miami Dolphins. Coach Ron Rivera said Benjamin suffered a sprained knee and will undergo an MRI exam in Charlotte.

Unfortunately, Benjamin wasn't the only Panthers wide receiver to leave practice injured. Rookie wideout Devin Funchess tweaked his hamstring, according to Rivera, and could be out a few days.

Consider the Benjamin news a positive development after his injury initially appeared to be much worse.

Benjamin put no weight on his left leg as he was moved onto the cart, the Charlotte Observer's Jonathan Jones reported.

The second-year wideout appeared to hurt himself when he made a cut during a 1-on-1 drill with Dolphins corner Reshad Jones. Benjamin made a cut and went down on what looked to be a non-contact play, per Jones.

Benjamin is one of a handful of players on the Panthers' roster the team can ill afford to lose if they are to win the NFC South for the third straight year.
