Arians: Andre Ellington 'real close to being full speed'

The Arizona Cardinals' backfield has been a mess this offseason, but we got a smidgen of positive news Thursday.

Coach Bruce Arians said Andre Ellington is "real close to being full speed" after dealing with a hamstring injury. Ellington is expected to play in the team's first preseason game Saturday versus the Kansas City Chiefs. He returned to practice on Monday.

Arians has been frank about his disappointment in his running backs throughout training camp. He was specifically peeved at Ellington and rookie David Johnson missing practices with injuries. Johnson remains out with a hamstring injury.

Arians suggested this week the team could look outside the organization for alternatives -- Chris Johnsonreportedly was offered a one-year deal.

Ellington getting close to full speed might not change Arians' outlook, but it's a step in the right direction for a muddy ground game.
