Injury roundup: Cowboys' Carr breaks hand bone

Cowboys defensive back Brandon Carr has broken a bone in his right hand and will have surgery on Monday in Dallas, head coach Jason Garrett told reporters Saturday.

The word from camp is that Carr suffered the injury during practice while playing in press coverage. Garrett compared the setback to an injury that former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray was able to play with last year.

One of the league's highest paid corners, Carr is scheduled to make $8 million this year in a package that will count as $12.7 million against the team's salary cap. Earlier in the offseason, the Cowboys and Carr's agents were in talks about a potential restructuring that would have cut the total salary and cap hit.

Carr started all 16 games in the secondary for Dallas last season, but he did not have an interception and some observers thought he took a step back in coverage. Carr has 14 interceptions in seven years in the NFL and had been working at extra drills after practice during the team's early sessions in Oxnard.

Here are some other injury updates from Saturday we are tracking:

  1. Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was held out of practice Saturday with a hamstring tweak, which he and the team insisted was minor. Bryant is not expected to participate in tomorrow's Blue-White scrimmage. His absence is a chance for undrafted rookie Lucky Whitehead, in competition for the fifth-receiver spot, to run with the starters. In other Dallas news, defensive end Ken Boatright is being released from the hospital, but there's no timetable for his return yet.
  1. The Giants announced that cornerback Prince Amukamara (groin) will not travel with the team for its preseason opener on Friday in Cincinnati. The team also said that safety Bennett Jackson has a quad injury.
  1. Rookie running back T.J. Yeldonsuffered a sprained finger at the Jaguars' open scrimmage at Everbank Field on Saturday night, the team announced.
  1. Seahawks tight end Cooper Helfet did not practice today due to a cracked rib, coach Pete Carroll said.
  1. The Ravens have announced that defensive end Brent Urban has a torn biceps and will have surgery. The team calls it a 12-14 week injury.
