Panthers CB Chris Houston decides to retire

Cornerback Chris Houston has decided to call it quits.

Houston informed the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday he is retiring. Panthers Coach Ron Rivera told reporters Wednesday that Houston's injured toe was causing him issues and that he felt it was time to retire.

The veteran corner did not play in the NFL last season due to a toe injury. He signed a one-year deal with Carolina in June and was in the midst of competing for a roster spot.

The 2007 Atlanta Falcons second-round pick last played for the Detroit Lions. He started 12 games for Detroit in 2013. Houston compiled 324 tackles and 13 interceptions in 91 career starts with the Falcons and Lions.

Houston, 30, nor the team offered an explanation for his retirement. The corner joins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin as the second Panthers player to retire in a week.
