University of Michigan's Nike deal worth $169 million

No wonder Michigan parted ways with Adidas.

The school on Wednesday announced details of its new apparel agreement with Nike that make for the nation's largest apparel contract in college sports: $169 million over 11 years. The deal begins on Aug. 1, 2016 and runs through 2027. A school option could extend the contract to 2031.

"After careful consideration, the right partner for the University of Michigan was Nike," said interim athletic director Jim Hackett.

Had the consideration been rushed and reckless rather than careful, we suspect the same conclusion would have been reached.

It's more offseason momentum for new coach Jim Harbaugh, who looks to rebuild a struggling Wolverines program that fired coach Brady Hoke last December. In locking itself into such a lucrative deal for a program coming off a 5-7 season, Nike has essentially bought a ticket for the Harbaugh ride, for better or worse.
